As parents of college bound high school seniors, you also feel the stress of the acceptance letter arrivals.  How do you help your child make the decision on the best school for them?  How quickly should you respond to the colleges?  In general, what should be your next steps?  Read on as we help clear the path for you and your next few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.\u202fPause and review carefully<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When one or more acceptance letters arrive, don\u2019t rush your decision. As noted by ACT Education Corp., students should \u201cwait for more options\u2026 weigh the pros and cons of all your options before committing to the first school that accepts you.\u201d<\/em> ACT<\/u><\/a>
As parents, help your child gather every offer letter, financial\u001eaid package, and key admission terms in one place.  This isn\u2019t accomplished over the holidays, this takes time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.\u202fCompare offers with meaningful criteria<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use a structured comparison including not just prestige, but academic fit<\/strong>, career alignment<\/strong>, financial cost<\/strong>, graduation rates<\/strong>, and job\u001eoutcome statistics<\/strong>. The College Board \u201cBigFuture\u201d guide recommends asking questions like: \u201cDoes the college offer the exact major I\u2019m interested in? What is the graduation rate? How many first\u001eyear students return?\u201d BigFuture<\/u><\/a>
As Pathfinders parents, focus on aligning the offer list with your student\u2019s identified career path and long\u001eterm earning expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.\u202fDig into financial aid and net cost now<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acceptance is just the start. You must closely review the financial\u001eaid award letters, compare total cost of attendance (tuition + fees + room\/board + extras) versus net price, and consider the likely return on investment (ROI) for each school. This dovetails with our ROI\u001efirst model. The College Board article emphasizes comparing awards and how a private college may be\u00a0as affordable<\/em>\u00a0as a public one when aid is involved.\u00a0BigFuture<\/u><\/a>
In your role as a parent, keep the debt side of the equation front of mind: how much would you or your child borrow, and what income would support repayment given the chosen career path?

4.\u202fVisit (or revisit) campuses, <\/strong>with specific lens<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If possible, take a second look at the campuses of your top\u001echoice schools now that acceptance is confirmed. Focus less on the scenic tour and more on: Will the academic department for the student\u2019s career path feel like home? Are there strong career services, internships, industry partnerships? 5.\u202fWatch and act on deadlines<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each school will list firm deadlines for acceptance\/declining offers, housing deposits, orientation registration, placement tests, submitting final transcripts, admitting financial\u001eaid changes, etc. The ACT resource lists deadlines like housing, orientation, final transcript submission. ACT<\/u><\/a>
Create a timeline for your family: plug in each deadline, set reminders, assign tasks between parent and student. Ensure nothing slips because missed deadlines can cost deposit forfeiture or financial aid changes.  Be careful to not rush the decision, as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6.\u202fEnsure senior\u001eyear performance stays strong<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even after acceptance, colleges expect the senior transcript and may revoke offers if performance drops significantly. The \u201csenior slide\u201d is real. For example, one guide notes: \u201cMany colleges will require an end\u001eof\u001eyear transcript \u2026 they\u2019ll know you gave up.\u201d SchoolHabits<\/u><\/a>

7.\u202fMaintain communication with your admissions and financial aid offices<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now is the time to keep channels open. If your student\u2019s senior year courses change, if there are updated test scores, or if family financial circumstances shift, notify the school. Use your student portal, email, and calls. As BigFuture says: \u201cCall or email the admissions office\u2026 Ask if someone there can put you in touch with current students and recent graduates.\u201d BigFuture<\/u><\/a>

Frame the acceptance as a step, not the finish line. Use it to energize further career and academic planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
